I have a 5HP Nissan NS5B. I thought the carb was dirty but took that apart and it's quite clean in the inside. Took out the plug and it was jet black, covered in soot and what I can imagine would be oil. Now, this engine calls for a BPR 7HS spark plug. Unfortunately, I can't find that plug anywhere. Using a cross reference chart, that plug references to an AC Delco 43XLS, which references to the BPR 6HS. The 6HS is the plug for 2002 and earlier, while the 7HS is for 2003 which I have. That all being said, if I put in the 43XLS which references to the 6HS, will I be ok?

I still have no idea if the plug will fix the stalling issues, but I have always started with the cheap fixes first and then go from there.

I think year is irrelevant, model is all, the plugs you need are :

NGK : BP7THS-10 or BPR7HS-10 (with resistor) Gap is 1.0 mm tight.

Champion equivalent : RL82YC Gaped to 1.0 mm.

Looking inside the carb will not tell you whether the small, invisible passages are clogged, just whether the bowl is clean.
A black plug will need to be changed. They foul faster... is too much oil in the mix?
Correct plugs are available from any dealer -- even online. Cross references are not accurate -- as you found out.
Whoever told you that you can differentiate Tohatsu/Nissan motors by model year is wrong. You must specify model/serial only for servicing.
The 6 series plug is for the 2.5 and 3.5 2-strokes. (hotter than a 7)
The 7 series is for the 5-40 hp 2-strokes.

BP is a protuded electrrode type plug. I use BP7HS electrode gaped 1.0 tight on my Tohatsu M5B HP outboard. Use 50:1 fuel/oil mix, not even an oil drop more and don't run that OB at constant idle, fast idle speeds, will foul plug faster. Run at 3/4 for extended time for carbon building up on top tip to burn out while plug works at a higher tip temp for that to happen

If that OB is revving under min wot revs as usually loaded, don't run at full throttle, will be lugging the engine badly. Will need an induction tach to check that...
