I had a leaky LU so I replaced the gaskets. When I reassembled the LU, I found I could not get the clutch cam to move the clutch push rod far enough in to engage the forward gear - it would only travel enough to be in neutral or reverse. After puzzling over it all night, the only thing I could come up with was that the clutch push rod seemed to be too short now. Just as an experiment, I placed a small ball bearing in front of the push rod between the rod and the clutch spring pin to shim it up and give it more length - and suddenly it worked perfectly, shifting fine between F, N, and R.
Although this is working now, I'm not keen on operating a motor spinning at a bazillion RPMs with a jury rigged system like this. Does anyone have any idea why my clutch push rod would seem shorter after I reassembled it? I've checked several times, and no, I don't have any extra parts that weren't installed.
