I have been searching the world over for a service manual for an 1987 NS55B. I have had a poor response from Nissan. I was told that it was produced in Canada, and that there were very few sold. It is not listed anywhere that I have looked.

I have a problem, not unlike a few I have read about, where the engine runs fine at low speeds, but as you open the throttle, it spits and sputters. I have done as much as I can without an IPB and some instruction.

There is a post on here about the fuel fittings causing this problem, and this may be. I replaced the fuel tank fittings, but with the same Attwood fittings that were on the boat in the first place. I would like to know what the original fittings looked like.

Thanks!!!!

Hi. I have the same problem. A buddy of mine finally looked at the motor and found that one of the cylinders was not firing and it was from a problem with the ignition coil. He's in the process of changing it. I will follow up with the results.

The 55 B is the same engine as the 50 C. Just get the 50 C manual. The engines were/are/will be only produced in Japan. You have to determine what system on the engine is giving you the trouble before you get too involved.

Fuel

Ignition

Mechanical

Unless it is a problem that changes with RPM, My engine has a good spark at both plugs. I removed them from the block one at a time. While pressing them against the block, I turned it over. The spark looked very strong on both plugs.

Thanks for the info on the NS50C. I will get a book on order. I would like to see the procedure on timing advance adjustment at WOT.

55B

Elvin, you are a wealth of information on these motors...
did you do extensive training on all ?
(eg. Honda,nissan, tohatsu)

Also, we rarely see Tohatsu in Canada,
yet from prior posts i believe you said they
were the biggest motor world wide ?

Re: Nissan NS55B

Over the course of the last 40 years I have been an authorized dealer for:

Chrysler
Mercury
Mariner
Tohatsu
Nissan
Suzuki
Honda
Yamaha

I also worked for the Tohatsu distributor in the U.S. for a couple of years. I have been to service schools on all(that doesn't really mean anything), but I don't profess to be an expert on anything other than Chrysler, Nissan and Tohatsu. Tohatsu is the second largest producer of outboards worldwide. Yamaha is number one. In the U.S., Mercury is the largest in terms of engines that they manufacturer being sold in the largest quantity. Tohatsu comes in second there as well.

Tohatsu does not import engines into Canada so you will not see too many there under that label. They do import Tohatsu's under the Nissan label into Canada and since Mercury's from 30 hp down are Tohatsu's with Mercury decals you actually have quite a lot of them running up there.

Yes, but, Tohatsu does not cut me a paycheck. I stopped working for NIMAC, the Tohatsu distributor, in 1993. I'm a mouthpiece for InternetOutboards now. A really, really big mouth :)

I just purchased a boat with this exact motor on it in near mint condition including service manual and original metal tank and fitting and will be glad to take any pics of parts that, you need. Just let me know.

Does this mean when ordering parts for the NS55B such as tach etc that I can just look up part # for the 50c and all will work?

Re: Nissan NS55B

Yes...But, since parts are no longer available for your engine it would be sort of moot. Both the 55 and 50C are offically anchors due to age.

I can use either a tach for another model or an aftermarket tach, right?

Use the Tohatsu tach. It is specially made by Faria for Tohatsu. Other units may (or may not) work correctly.

Re: Nissan NS55B

I have inherited a 16ft 1981 Alumacraft side console with a NS55B. The motor idled on muffs for me just fine. The first trip to the water it took some cranking to start but caught and started to idle fine. I let it warm for a few minuets before giving some throttle. I got about half power from full throttle, but the motor sounded fine. No sputter or stall. I went from full to neutral to reverse and back a few times. Even restarted the motor a few times. ( I am a computer tech so it looked like liable option) Suddenly, while at full throttle, it took off and ran the rest of the day fine. I stopped about 6 times and trolled around fishing the lake. On the way back to the ramp it cut off. I was WOT and it just stopped on me. It satrted back up fine but now had a slightly rough idle. I was able to get 1/8 throttle and put along slowly. any more throttle would kill it quick. For a second it would sound like it was going to take off, then promptly die. always crank straight back up. I had to be towed in by a passing pontoon boat. Otherwise I would of been putting along for several hours. I decided to tinker with the carbs the next day. The motor turned but would not start.

The motor was serviced regularly and well kept. Both carbs were rebuilt 2 years ago and the boat was run once since. My dad kept his motors clean and serviced with all the maintenance records. The only service it ever had pertained to the carbs and only firing on one cylinder. I figured a jet had gotten clogged. I pulled off the carbs. set to 1 3/4 on the mix screw .Both carbs looked brand new. There was some small debris in the carb bowl. I blasted out every part with carb cleaner, inspected everything for wear and proper movement and reassembled. I then removed all the fuel lines, filter and pump to remove any debris and reassembled.

Still will not run, no change. Beyond that i have not had time to get any deeper into the issue. I am no mechanic but am very mechanically inclined. I have rebuilt several carbs but know little about 2 stroke engines. I have found parts list and an owners manual here. I would like to purchase a factory 2 stoke service manual and here some useful advice on getting this to run.

Thanks for your help

Re: Nissan NS55B

I got it running. The safety switch was the culprit. I overlooked the switch because it still had the lock on.
