Hi Guys

I was working on my boat this weekend and came across a problem. My boat is a very simple center console 1964 16' whaler with a Nissan 2 stroke outboard, electric start, cable steering. Boat has been sitting for about 2 years. I recently rebuilt the trailer, cleaned carbs, changed impeller, changed lower unit oil, etc to get boat ready. Never bothered trying to start it because I didn't have fresh fuel. Well I tested the trailer and filled her up with fresh fuel, put the key in....and nothing.

I noticed the controls on the center console had no signal. I know the battery is good because the trim/tilt control on the engine works fine if I press it manually from the engine switch. When I move over to the center console controls, I get absolutely nothing. No trim, no start, nothing. I checked the wiring, unplugged/ checked/ all the harnesses and everything seems okay. I changed the 20Amp inline fuse on the engine, but the one I replaced looked just fine. No electronics on this boat, only a tachometer and an hour meter.

I thought the kill switch, but the motor would turn over and not start right? Also the trim/tilt would work regardless of the trim switch.

Are there any other fuses on the motor that would cause these symptoms?

I'm thinking it could be the ignition module where you put the key in, but wanted some suggestions

Thanks

Will engine start if bat is shorted directly to starter motor ? If not, bat amps are way low to start the engine with punch. Re charge or replace bat. That OB needs a 70 Amp/H cranking power min bat to operate correctlyr as per factory specs.

I think battery is okay - The controls are dead. Even if the battery was low, I would hear a click or something as the starter tries to engage. Also the trim on the controls would work, as would the electric choke, all of which are not working from the control handle.

Appreciate your response.

Probably key switch is shot, has bad electrical contacts which does nothing providing energy to different electrical components. Check with a multimeter.

Full data for testing the electrics is in the Factory service manual (skip the aftermarket manual). There is a possibility the power or ground to the control is not active. Time to test.

Plainly in agreement, most times ground contacts are overlooked, could be corroded, darkened, salted, not closing the electrical circuit. All grounds must be shinny looking for top electrical contact. If not, can polish, shine them with a Dremel drilll fine polishing drill bits.
