Hi all. New to this forum. I just recently bought an old Nissan NS40c. It starts up fine but then cuts out after running for a while. It also cuts out when shifted into gear. There were some cracked fuel hoses which I replaced. I am also in the process of changing the fuel pump diaphrams.

Also the motor has a "pop" when running in neutral. Checked the plugs, they are a little black one was a bit moist. I am an amatuer at all this. Anyone have any suggestions? The motor was in storage for a year or so till now.

Any help would be great guys. Thanks.

Re: Nissan NS40C Troubles

I'm just a back yard mechanic too but since I'm here I'll suggest a thorough carb cleaning. Take them off, take them apart and soak them in carb cleaner for several hours (except for any plastic parts unless it's not supposed to come off the carb such as the fuel inlet on one of mine, it'll break if you try to get it off. . . oops). New plugs too if you haven't already done that. If you've never taken a carb apart it isn't as difficult or as complicated as it sounds. Just pay attention as to how it came apart and put it back the same way. The first time I did it I was afraid I'd have to take it to a shop so they could fix the mess I made but I surprised myself. You can probably get the specifics on the different settings for idle mixture and such from some of the pros here. They've answered every question I've had. Great site with great people. Check out previous posts and do a search or too as well.

change needle. it's rubber and it wears out just enough to let too much fuel get by. Just did it myself motor runs like a charm. good luck

Well, if they haven't fixed in the last 5 years, its going to take probably some more assistance. ;)

If you intend to tear the whole carb apart including air/gas needle, prior doing so and if the engine has had a good previous idle speed, using a caliper measure the distance from head screw to carb base, put same measurement when assembling back (usually about 10/11 mm distance) that way you won't have to guess the right adjustment if you don't know how or have the tech parameters to do so.

John, I'm going to jump into my time machine and travel back to April 4th of 2005 and take care of this so we will not have to talk about it today:) Or maybe I'll just go take a nap...Yep, nap it is.
