Just aquired NS18C2. What year is this engine? Serial is 350A-58403. Also what does the C2 suffix mean?

Thanks,
Rodney

Re: Nissan NS18C2 Year

The C indicates that it is a C model. The 2 means it is a long shaft. I'll have to check with Nissan on Monday for the year.

Thank you Elvin, that was quick! Any harm using a long shaft on a 10 1/2 foot RIB?

Thanks,
Rodney

It's wrong. It's not wrong in that the world will come to an end. But, it is wrong in that the boat will not achieve any of it's perfromance points...Plus it looks really stupid and everyone will make fun of you. Maybe not to your face, but you will be the butt of jokes behind closed doors. Seriously, it doesn't make any sense to do it. If you are stuck with the longshaft at least get a minni jacker plate and mount it to the stern of the inflatable. That will allow you to use the longshaft without causing performance problems.

Re: Nissan NS18C2 Year

Very strange, I measured from the anti-cavitation plate to the point on the stern bracket where the top of the transom would go, and it measured a little less that 18". Maybe someone grafted the C2 head onto a short shaft lower unit.

As far as my friends making me the butt of jokes, that would be nothing new. :^

Thanks,
Rodney

Re: Nissan NS18C2 Year

Rodney,
The "C2" doesn't mean its a long shaft. The NS18C2 is actually the base model number of that engine. The full model # may be NS18C22. The last 2 would mean its a long shaft. If the full model # was NS18C21 then it's a short shaft. When the 18C was first sold it was a "C" model. Then after some minor improvement, they changed the model to C2 (then to C3, C4, etc). According to the folks at Nissan, your serial belongs to an NS18C21..which means its a short shaft. 1988 model year. (sometimes the "guru" gets it wrong) .d:)

Re: Nissan NS18C2 Year

TGUY, thanks, great info. Nice to know the motor was not "morphed" into a short shaft. Didn't see the "1" on the serial number plate but maybe it has worn off or my 55 year old eyes aren't what they used to be.

Re: Nissan NS18C2 Year

I am occasionally wrong..But since the Model information was incomplete I wasn't really wrong. For some unknown reason I just assumed that the 2 was the Longshaft identifier since it always comes on the end of the Nissans. I shouldn't have just assumed because you all know what the means:) At least you will not look silly!

Re: Nissan NS18C2 Year

Yeah it is confusing. All of the Nissan/Tohatsu serial # labels will only show the model "family" or base model not the full model #. So if the motor's full model # is NS18C2EF1 (electric start, tiller handle, short shaft version), the "family" is the NS18C2 which is what will show on the serial # label. The only way to know the full model # is to contact Nissan/Tohatsu with the serial # and ask them to look it up.

You know they are supposed to have the shaft length identifier on the second line. Sometimes it really is there:)

As the engine is somewhere between 16 and 22 years old...A couple of hundred at best.
