Nissan 9.9B, can't get lower unit off

I have a Nissan 2 stroke 9.9 hp that is not pumping water to the engine. I just ordered an impeller kit but, can't get the lower unit down. It doesn't seperate at all. It's not the shift linkage as I've already disconnected that. I've tried a rubber mallet but, no go. Don't want to get too forcefull as it is all aluminum down there. Any ideas?

Sometimes the drive shaft gets stuck into the crank shaft. Time, prayer and luck to get it to drop.
