Nissan 9.9 sputtering

I have a 2 yr old 9.9 and it shut down on me yesterday. It started fine but when I tried to accelerate it would not speed up and then all of sudden ran fast, slowed down and then reved up again. It repeated this for about 10 mins. and finally shut down. I noticed last yaer when it was running that it would hiccup on ocassion but I thought I was just bogging down in high weeds but now I was wrong.
I check the plugs and the gas is fresh. Any suggestions before I take it to a dealer?

Forgot to mention that it is a 2 stroke. Oil/gas mix is correct.

Hi Old Salt,

Sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem. Have you cleaned out your carburetor? That would be the first thing I'd do before paying big $$$ to a mechanic.
