I have a Nissan 9.8B two stroke, carborated 2001 model outboard that has no power. When the engine is started in neutral it reeves up fine but when you put it in fwd gear the engine will not rev up even though the throttle is wide open. It boggs down.
Water is coming from the water port and gas has the required amount of oil/fuel mix. Spark plugs are new. Any suggestions?

Check over the fuel system first, then ignition, then mechanical. Odds are the carb needs cleaned.

As this issue has been addressed before check connector's o'rings, if dried, worn will let air in and engine not perform satisfactorily. If severely worn will bog engine near inmediately. As o'rings are not available, check an auto store, fit same size and material,

I rebuilt the carb and it looked great prior to rebuilding it. There was no varnish and the bowl was totally clean and float was good. I purchased a rebuild kit and changed gaskets, o-rings, float, seat. I have yet to ops check it but will this weekend. Thanks for the information. Sea Rider, you stated to check "connector's o'rings", what are those? A friend told me that it may be the timing? I have an automotive timing light and was wondering will that work to check the timing? Any help would be great! I will post an update on Sunday. Thanks again! Stan

If you did not completely disassemble the entire carb (all jets and the emulsion tube nozzle), and do a 4-hour soak of all non-rubber carb bits in real carb dip, followed by a liberal blow-out of all passages with generic carb spray, you did not adequately clean the carb passages.

I have never seen a 9.8B that was off time. Adjustment is typically only done if the power head has been removed/disassembled. You need to understand the link and sync, and just confirm that it is correct, using section 2 of your Factory service manual as a guide.

Luis was referring to the o-rings in the fuel line connectors, which do go bad over time.
