I just bought a nissan 8hp model #ns8b serial#3b2-1 44632.
it is electric start they have already hooked up the battery termanls and there are three wires on the engine that not hooked up a green wire, the old owner told me to hook up to the new ignition that he gave me. The other is a blue wire for the choke and a tan/brown wire.

1st question is do I hook up the choke to the ignition so it is always hot when themotor is on or do I put it to another toggle switch and shut it off when the boat is warmed up.

2nd what do I do with the brown/tan wire? he was not sure it was his fathers motor.

thanks mike

Re: Nissan 8hp wirring question

Mike,

I would recommend getting a Factory service manual from any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer. A cheap investment that may help you avoid expensive mistakes. You can also download a parts catalog (with excellent exploded diagrams) for free from Elvin's website at http://www.internetoutboards.com/PartsCatalogMenu.htm

The green wire is for the starter solenoid, and should be routed through the neutral safety switch, so the starter can't crank when the motor is in gear. Of course, you only activate this to crank.

The brown wire is for the stop switch.

The blue wire is for the electric choke solenoid. The electric choke is designed as a "push-to-choke" arrangement. Do not activate it except while choking during starting. Two bad things are sure to happen if you do: 1. Burn out the choke solenoid and/or wiring for it, and 2. Run so rich that the plugs foul in record time. You can get a correct Tohatsu/Nissan RC ignition switch (and key) that will have the push-to-choke feature from any dealer, or there are aftermarket switches that also have push-to-choke. As an alternative, you can wire it to a momentarily-closed push-button switch.

Paul

Thanks for all the good info I just got the boat and have plans to get a service and parts manual. The thing that stinks is there are no dealers around the nearest one is almost 45 miles away.
