Hi,
I have a 1989 Nissan 8HP (NS8B) that was in storage (in a shed) for 15 years. I was dismayed to find that mice had built a nest under the cover causing severe corrosion. The carb was completely ruined and the shift lever shaft was eaten away along with part of the intake manifold. The throttle cable nuts also fell apart. I almost gave up on it right there but the motor turned freely with good compression and it gave a nice hot spark.
I bought a carb from the 9.8HP mainly because it was $20 cheaper than the 8HP but also thinking I might get a bit more performance. I also got a new shift lever and intake manifold plus assorted bushings, gaskets, and fasteners. The reed valves were fine and there was no evidence of corrosion on the crank side of the motor. I oiled all the bearings I could see before putting the reed valve plate back on. The water pump impeller looked practically new so I left it alone but I changed the gear oil.
Anyway after cleaning it up and replacing the bad parts it seems to be running nicely on my 12 foot inflatable but I do have some questions:
1) I set up the linkage so that the coil plate is at the fully advanced stop at wide open throttle. With the grip rotated to minimum throttle the coil plate hits the minimum advance stop. The throttle lever on the carb actually hits the idle stop somewhat before minimum advance. Is this setup correct?
2) Is there any problem with using the 9.8 carb? Should I expect to get more power? The 8 and 9.8 motors have the same displacement.
3) I still have some superficial corrosion to clean up from inside the powerhead. Is there a chemical cleaner that will remove this?
4) Is there anthing else I should do?
Thanks, Bob
