I have a 1987 or 1988 Nissan 8 hp and need some advice as to what I should be looking forward to when trying to start her up after sitting for about 8 months unused.

The last time I had it out was on brackish water and did not flush with fresh water, drain gas or prep for storage before putting it away for eight months. I have been searching online and have already concluded that I'll have to remove the carb and clean.

What concerns me most is the salt water that has been sitting in the lines.

1. Should I get a carb rebuild kit while I'm at it?
2. What should I do about the salt water that has been sitting in the lines and water pump? What exactly should I be removing and cleaning. Then, how do I do it?

Please, if you have any patience at all I would really appreciate your help. You can always email me at frankscerbo@gmail.com directly but I'll continually be checking this post.

When I get her going again I'll be sure to take more care of her and keep in my garage rather than 40 miles away at the water.

Clean the carb ...If you have to. Then try the engine.

How long does salt corrosion typically take to set in?

I want to make sure this motor will last me. It ran strong when I got it a year ago second hand. Then I was using it on and off and I could tell the carb was getting a little sticky when I used it. How do I check for other issues related to sitting salt water?

Salt trauma is one of those things that is different from case to case. Some people never do any maintenance without a problem. Some develop problems within six months. On a small engine that is stored out of water there is little to do. Flush the engine within two hours of use. Run the carb dry. Check your gear oil every 20 hours and change every 100 hours. Put in a new waterpump kit every.....Two to five years, depending on your use. There are some products you can flush the engine with that will disolve old deposits. Saltaway being the most common.

Re: Nissan 8hp advice after storage and salt water

I brought the motor out a couple days ago, primed the bulb, locked on earmuffs and it started up on the third pull. Today I brought it out on the water in my 10' inflatable and ran it for a while at idle. It was a little rough for the first 20 minutes but as time went on it ran much smoother. I bought salt-away and ran that through for 30 seconds after flushing it when I got home as the instructions indicated to hopefully start breaking down any salt deposits.

The next job is to clean the carb. I don't know what I'm looking at under the hood so any help with where to get a 1987-1988 Nissan outboard repair manual for an 8hp would be appreciated.
