While the boat was backed onto the launch ramp, I discovered hat the stater rope was stuck; I couldn't pull it. Pulled out of the water and stood for 1.5 hours on my tip toes trying to identify, diagnose and repair problem while the kids waited to go for a 4th of July sail. No joy. The shop I just paid to check the brand new motor is closed until 9 July. Is there a way that I can fix the problem and take the family for a sail?

Wiggle the shift lever in and out of gear. It sounds like you don't have the engine in neutral..........Or the engine has burned itself up. Did you add oil to the engine before use?

PS. Why did you pay a local shop to check the engine? It's test run at the factory before being boxed. Other than adding oil to the engine it should be ready to run out of the box.

I checked neutral positioning; switched the selector back and forth and spun the prop to ensure neutral positioning. and I watched the white plastic recoil cam thing switch between positions. I'm sure the problem is in the recoil mechanism. It's stuck tight.

The 1st thing I did when taking the motor out of the box is add 20 oz or so (450 ml) of SAE 20-50 4cycle outboard oil. Thought I'd be running that weekend and I wanted to treat it right.

Sad to say the motor sat in my garage over a year while I had to take care of other concerns, so I wanted a professional to look it over for gummed up lubes, etc.

Pull the starter loose, just three bolts. That way you can see if the starter is screwed up or if the engine is locked up. Either way, three year warranty at your local service center.

Re: Nissan 6hp 4 stroke starter recoil stuck.

Thanks, I pulled the starter recoil unit off last night after cutting the yard. It was a much easier task to do at home sitting in a chair this time than it was standing on my toes on the launch ramp Wednesday. The starter recoil unit was indeed locked up and wouldn't spin. I figured that out, rewound the coil and all is well.

I then read the owner's manual again to learn how to crank the engine without the recoil unit and found that the flywheel(?) wouldn't spin (no gasoline & no spark plug). I grabbed a wrench and gently rotated the flywheel until the motor belched gasoline fumes from the combustion chamber. The motor then turned by hand. A small amount of bottom end oil dripped out of the weep hole in the lower unit, but it stopped after a few revolutions.

I reattached the recoil unit to the motor; it now turns from the starter cord like I think it should.

Thanks for your help.

PS The shop that supposedly checked the motor out for me is the local authorized service center. I can't say for sure that they didn't do the work I paid them for, but it'll be a while before I take them anymore work.
