I have a 2002 Nissan NS 5B 5hp outboard that starts but won't stay running. It will run if you keep pulling and pushing the choke in and out but once you leave the choke alone it dies. Has anyone else encounter this problem, and if so, know what the cause maybe? Thanks!

Fuel delivery issue, demonstrated by the fact that richening the mix allows it to run. Check over the entire fuel system, and clean the carb... Properly.

Probably a kaput fuel pump diaphragm on that 12 year oldie, check including complete external/internal tank/engine fuel circuits.

For best internal clean carb cond, disconnect fuel hose or close upper tank fuel **** and run fuel bowl dry after each use untill engine drops dead...

Re: Nissan 5hp won't stay running

Well, I finally got around to taking the carb apart and cleaned it with carb cleaner and put it back together but now it will run at full throttle without pulling the choke in or out but it will only run at a very slow speed or idle and once you let up on the gas it dies. In the process of running the fuel out I notice that once it started running low on fuel it seemed to run fine until it ran out of gas. My guess is that it is getting to much fuel so I tried turning the needle valve in but even with it all the way in it didn't seem to make any difference. I took the needle valve out and it did appear to be a bit worn at the tip. I tried to find one for sale on the internet but it appears that part is discontinued. Does this sound like a needle valve issue and if so does anyone know where I could purchase one?

Thanks for all your help!

If you have a worn tip issue, you might have a float level issue as well as both works together. Probably too much fuel in. Put fuel/air screw back to specs. Can buy those parts at any Tohatsu dealer or check with Paul, parts are currently available. If engine is old change float too or get a new carb kit and viol?.

Chaze, I think you are trying to adjust the pilot screw. That's not causing flooding, but a bad float needle could. The pilot screw should be about 1-1/2 to 3 turns out... depends on the individual motor, and you must have the rest of the system working before adjusting it.

If you did a complete disassembly, then a proper 4-hour soak in real carb dip, and then did a blow-out with generic carb spray, then if the float height seemed OK, you may still have a word float needle. Carb kits are still available.

The old 2-stroke motors will speed up just before they die when you run the fuel out.
