Nissan 5hp water pump question

I just bought a 5hp Nissan outboard and test ran it today in a barrel of water. The engine fired up and ran great but I noticed that the water that runs through the engine was coming out in drips rather than a stream. As I increased the rpm the water came out in faster drips but never a stream. The engine did not seem overly hot while test running it and everything else seemed to function as it should. Is this how it is supposed to be or do I need to change the water pump impeller?

First see if the pee tube is clogged. If the wp kit is over 3 years old, probably good to replace it.

I should probably put it back in the barrel of water to test it again if there is debris in the tube. The previous owner didn't mention anything about the impeller and the engine is a 2005 so I think I'll buy the whole kit. Thank you.

If you don't know exactly when it was replaced then it's always a good idea to replace the impeller (or whole water pump kit) when you get a new engine. If the old parts are good, you can always keep them as spares in case you need one quickly.

The engine should pee a good stream unless it's blocked or you have a bad impeller. The pee stream won't be warm, as it's water before it's gone though the whole engine.

You don't need much water flow at all to keep the engine cool in neutral. Once under load that changes dramatically.

Thanks for the info. The tube was clogged. After unclogging it I ran it again and It was shooting a good stream from idle up through the rpm range. The water stream was cool just as you said it should be. I am going to test run it at the lake to be sure everything is good to go but all looks good for now.
