I have a bit of a trouble with my old 5 hp Hissan engine (NS 5B). It starts and runs idle just fine, but when in gear and more gas is applied the engine just dies. I checked the fuel supply, fuel filter and tried replacing the spark plug to no avail. Can anybody help, what should I look at next?

Re: Nissan 5hp Trouble

Elvin, thanks for you help. I have cleaned the carburator, finding a lot of marine growth inside and the engine ran fine after I put it back together. But after a week of storage, the problem repeated. I was about to open the carb again to check it out, but the problem went away and it ran fine the whole day. Next morning it started happening again. Any ideas? Could there be a problem with the lower unit? The water flow is fine and exhaust seems to be coming out fine too, however I suspect that something down there still can be plugged up.

Probably still the carb. Small passages. Cleaning the carb involves soaking it for hours in carb cleaner. The acid in the carb cleaner dissolves the buildup in the areas you can't see to clean.

There is also the possibility that the system may be fouled adding crap to the carb, fuelpump etc. as it operates.
