I have a 2001 Nissan 5hp outboard. It seems to be running fine. It is not making any abnormal noises but it seems to be slipping in and out of drive or maybe there is a clutch slipping. Its like the boat is bucking in the water. It will have power and then loose it real quick. When this happens the engine doesnt make any abnormal sounds and no noises coming from the lower unit.

Welcome to the forums,

You must have a spun prop, make prop slip test to confirm...

Also verify the adjustment of the shift linkage joint (the one you access under the rubber grommet in the exhaust housing). If you are only part way in F, you can jump in and out of gear. If left that way, the forward bevel gear and clutch dog will eventually self-destruct, and the debris they leave in the LU lube will eat up the other parts in the LU.

Re: Nissan 5hp question.

Use your Factory service manual (available from any dealer, including me) as a guide. Loosen the coupler bolt 1 turn. Put the cam rod of the LU down into R. Put the shift lever in R. Tighten the bolt. Check that you are fully engaging both F and R, and the LU is in N when the shift lever clicks into N.
