I absolutely LOVE my Nissan 5hp made in 2000 I got, (only for 350$) It runs great.

However, When I take it in the river by me, which is tight / shallow The water pump does not "****" out water when I am running it on idle speeds.

As a result, it seems to run hotter than it should.

is this normal? Or, should I clean / replace the water pump, it only "pisses" water when I put it just a tad bit past idle.

It would be a good idea to put in a water pump kit. Once you have done that you can see if you need to start troubleshooting.

At idle speeds this engine pisses very little, change impeller as recommended by TG, would be advisable to buy a complete chrome plated pump kit, instead of the standard one if you'll be using engine on rivers. River waters contains sand/other materials in suspension that will help wear prematurely your pump hosing & impeller.

Your Nissan is manufactured by Tohatsu in Japan. Tohatsu code: 369-65231-0 (Chrome Plated Water Pump Kit) Other important issue to consider : Buy a original flushing atachment plug, part number 333-60007-0, remove thick bolt under engine, conect plug/water hose, open water valve to full, let run for 5/10 minutes, the pressure will free sticked debries, sand, mud, whatever tends to block engine water circulation passages, will help refrigerate properly. This model does not have a thermostat, so you will have a well flushed cylinder head.

Thank you! I never thought about how it gets beat up more out in the river. I am def. going to consider buying a more durable one. Its rough out there! Is it normal to run the motor for 5+ minutes for a flushing?

usually, I drop the motor in a bucket and run it for about 2 minutes. A thermostat... How great would that be! I get nervous using it in the river b/c of this issue. This should solve it hopefully!

Ooops, was thinking in salt water use, 5 minutes flushing, could be much less, the extra 3 min won't kill your engine, usually use the flushing adapter and engine on a stand, flush it with on or off engine for min 5 minutes, that's the cool part not to have a thermostat (no need waiting to open up and recirculate water coming inside head)

If using engine most of time in a river, consider the chrome plated pump kit, will last longer than standard one. One more issue: your Nissan 5 HP has a internal gas tank and a external 3 gal one ?
