I have a few problems all related.
Nissan 5hp 2 stroke early 90's to mid 90's motor

1. The water pump would pump fine for a few minutes and then stop and the engine would over-heat. I shut down right away so I don't think there is any damage. I ordered a new pump kit and lower end gasket kit.

2. I drained the lower end oil and it was milky -- water I assume.

3. I pulled the prop - but my Clymer's manual says it should be a shear pin prop and it does not seem to be.

4. I removed the two bolts holding the lower end and started to slide the assembly out. It went about 2 inches, but no farther. I am hesistant to force it. When it drops down the **** lever moved from "Foreward to "reverse".

Did I forget to disconnect something?
Will the lower end gasket kit fix the water in the oil issue?

Any other tricks to this job?

thanks.

You have to disconnect the shift linkage and you should throw that manual in the can and get a factory manual.

Re: Nissan 5hp lower end

Thanks Elvin. You are right about the manual. It did not show the disconnect behind the giant rubber plug. I am considering ordering a factory shop manual, but also thinking of getting a new 5 hp 4 Stroke. I am in CA and they are getting tough on 2 cycles.

I got the bottom end off and I have a pump kit and bottom end seal kit. However, I can not get the lower pump case apart. The gasket is hardened up and won't release. I will go to the parts store and get some advice on how to do that. Any hints?

I was wondering what keeps the rubber impeller from just slipping on the drive shaft? There does not seem to be a key or anything fastening it to the rod. Just a flat side on the rod.

As long as I am in there should I replace the rubber fittings the water lines slide into?

Can the main water line be replaced. Mine seems a little corroded.

Finally, there is a bracket about 4-5 inches up above the lower end that the tubes and rods got through. It is corroded and split in mine. Do you know if it is available anywhere?

What is a good source of parts? Nothing in China Lake, CA. In fact, even the lake is dry!!

Thanks!!

"Any hints?" Gentle tapping with a hammer and some judicious prying with a screwdriver.

"I was wondering what keeps the rubber impeller from just slipping on the drive shaft?" There is a key.

"As long as I am in there should I replace the rubber fittings the water lines slide into?" Never hurts, but probably not necessary.

"Can the main water line be replaced?" Yes, you have to pull the power head to do it.

"Do you know if it is available anywhere?" Any Nissan or Tohatsu dealer.

"What is a good source of parts?" Any Nissan or Tohatsu dealer...Your closest dealer is 70 miles away so we are probably your best bet. However, there are a variety of sources available to you, including the Mercury dealer network.
