motor doesn't want to run 'slow'- it will start, gradually begin to race- when the throttle is adjusted, it wants to either die or race -but not run slow- when it dies, it acts like it's flooded(?) and needs to start w/choke on- In addition, when I put it in gear (F or R)it kicks up on the tilt (out of the water)and I have to reset it- TIA

The carburetor is probably dirty.

so I need to take it all apart again? Is the kick-up problem being caused by the shift rod being too high (not allowing the latch to work on lower part of tilt setteing?)

It sounds more like you have the engine RPM up too high so that when you put it in gear its stressed.

Thanks, I guess that's probably a result of me trying not to let it die at idle. Also have made adjustments to idle and throttle to correct rough idle -where should these be set?

That adjustment settings will be found in your service manual. There is a range...And a procedure to follow.
