Nissan 55hp hard to start with plugs in

Just bought boat with 55hp Nissan 2 stroke. Approx 86-88 model. When I try to turn over with fresh battery it slowly turns a few times almost like it has a dead battery. Then I remove plugs and turns over like new w/starting of course. Then put plugs back in and does same things but can usually get it to crank. I guess the bottom line is that it just seems like it is way to much compression which I'm sure it doesn't. I have a brand new battery so it shouldn't be that. Pulling out my hair. HELP PLEASE!!! Once it runs it goes like a scalded dog.

It's either a bad conection to your starter or the starter itself needs replacing.

Connection as in at the starter or battery? I was reading some other similar post and replies but for Johnson I believe and there were mentions of compression. One said something about compression between cyl 1 & 2 being different. Would or could this have anything to do with it and if so then how? I just bought this boat and hoping I didn't buy a motor needing a rebuild. Getting scared. When running it runs great. Would it run good if it needed a rebuild due to compression issues?

What bat are you using, seems bit low on cranking amps, need minimum a 70 AH, or charging system, starter not working properly. When you remove plugs you have very low compression, you will be able to pull rope with your teeth...

730 CA excide battery. Cranking/trolling. I am going to give it a good charge overnight and replace plugs in the morning then see what we have. Thanks

Check/clean/retighten all high-amp connections, both through the solenoid to the starter, and the GROUND (which is often overlooked). If still cranking slowly, check to see how many amps the starter is drawing. If a huge number, the starter needs a rebuild or replacement. Bear in mind that the NS55 is long obsolete, and parts are rapidly becoming very scarce. Beware the money pit.

Take a volt meter, ground one end to the battery negative terminal, have a freind help, make sure you are in water or have muffs on flowing water, take the other end of the volt meter straight to the starter connection, set meter for DC 20V, try to start motor and read voltage at the starter. This will tell you where to start looking. You should read a minimun of 12v at the starter before engaging, should be more like 13.5 if battery is fully charged. While cranking the engine, you should have a minimun of 10.5v but anything higher is good. If the volt meter reads below 10.5v, start with a load test on the battery, check every connection both positive and negative for good connectivity. I have a NS55 and like Paul said, parts are scarce but some are still available. PM me for help and i will try.
