Hi Guys,
I have a Nissan 5 h.p. about 8 years old . It is gray in color and has a built in gas tank.
The gear shift is cable operated and when you put the engine in reverse it stays for a couple of seconds then goes into nuetral by itself. The only way to back out of a slip is to hold the shift in reverse as you back out.
Is there possibly an adjustment somewhere that will fix this ? The engine runs fine in foward gear.
Thanks,

Bill

The shift rods may not be in the right position or the clutch/gear faces could be worn out.

Re: nissan 5 pops out of reverse

Thanks for the reply internetoutboards,
Funny thing this problem only came about the first time the motor was used this year, whem it was put away last season it was o.k. and did not pop out of gear.
On the Nissan site they mention something about an adjustment for shift problems but do not go into any detail.
It works fine if you hold the shift lever back in reverse, you just can not release it or it jumps out of gear.
As soon as the weather gets a little better here in the north east I will take off the cover and try to see whats up.
thanks,
Bill

Bill,

The adjustment is inside the motorleg, behind that black rubber cover seal.

Elvin,
Where can I find information about making adjustments on the shift controls for my nissan?
Is there any info available on line? At least I know where to look for the adjustment now.

Thanks ,

Bill

Bill,

You need to invest into a service manual, but adjusting the linkage will be obvious once you see how its connected.
