Nissan 5 hp outboard 2 stroke engine problems

The engine was running good and fast today when I took my boat out but when I started heading back it wouldn't go full speed and slowed down to about half of its normal speed and then would randomly go faster and slower what could be wrong

Could be "almost" anything. First thing to check is fuel, then ignition, and finally mechanical systems. Diagnose, don't guess. Make sure you gave good, fresh, water-free gas flowing well to the carb. Verify the plug condition and gap.

Welcome to Iboats,

Were you using the internal or external fuel tanks ? If internal probably a fuel restriction issue in the fuel ****, there's a tiny screen mesh filter which must be immaculate clean to deliver fuel fuel flow when giving max throtttle...
