Nissan 4S5B Shift Lever Replacement

I?ve got a 2003 5hp and want to replace a broken shift lever. I purchased the Tohatsu 1&2 Cylinder Service Manual, but it?s lacking any clear detail on how to replace the manual shift lever. My question is can it be replaced without removing the power head?

Sounds like you got an aftermarket manual. In general, those pubs are ok for general information (only), but are otherwise basically doorstops.

You can also get the service manual from any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer.

Yes, you need to remove the powerhead. 6 bolts, with 10mm heads. The LU can stay on. You will also want 2 new o-rings for the shift lever, possibly the shift lever bushing, and a base gasket for the powerhead. Be careful that you don't lose the spring and ball for the shift detent.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I purchased the ?Tohatsu 1 & 2 Cylinder Models Service Manual? from Helm, and after spending over an hour reading through it I was very disappointed in its content and layout. There is absolutely no discussion about the 5hp manual shift lever, and it jumps around between models when reading through a section i.e. Water Pump or Lower Unit servicing. Thanks for your reply.
