I have this 1989 nissan 40HP outboard, 2 stroke, 2 cylinder on an inflatable, I bought a few days ago.
It ran fine over the weekend, but, this afternoon, I was idling out of the harbour, and the engine simply quit, the electric starter could not turn the motor over, nor could I pull the manual recoil starter. Engine seemed seized. i tried to shift to reverse, or neutral, no problem, but the engine remained locked. I pulled the cover, and actually was able to turn the flywheel and ring gear easily by hand, I twisted it a little, back and forth, and I was able to restart, no funny noises, ran fine, and was able to drive back. it seems something caused it to seize, or lock up temporarily.
I did start the engine electrically.
what oh what couild be the problem. I hate to go out in the San Francisco bay, and have another seisure, i cannot padle that far..

Many thanks. Henri.
