Nissan 40c problems some more

Hi all. From this great forum I have done the following to my nis40c. Changed fuel filter, fuel pump diaphram, cleaned carb, changed plugs, fuel line, and tank. After all that the motor started on the first pull. But then I took the motor out it ran fine up to half throttle then after that it would bog down and sputter. I ran it at half throttle all day and right when I got to the dock (thank goodness) it died and wouldn't start.

Does anyone have any ideas what my next step is? I am an amateur at all this. Thanks again for all the help.

This probably won't help but I will pass it along. I bought a 1999 Nissan 40 C over a year ago and had problems almost from the beginning. It stalled and quit at half throttle. I had it "tuned up" repeatedly but the problem persisted. I finally found the problem myself, with help from Elvin (Internet Outboards) after replacing a bunch of stuff. It had the wrong fitting on the gas tank and tank end of the fuel line. I replaced the fuel line and tank fitting and no more problems. Good luck.

It is probably still the carb. Clean it again. Cleaning the carb means taking it off, taking it apart and soaking it in carb cleaner for at least three hours. If it is still giving you trouble you will just have to determine which system on the engine is giving you the trouble.

Fuel(tank to carb)

Ignition(spark plug to flywheel)

Mechanical(cylinders, head, crankshaft, pistons)

Outboard problems are usually fuel related so start there.

Ok thanks guys. I did strip the carb and actually soaked it for 24 hours. Should I rebuild?

Also what are the right fittings for this motor? Maybe I have the wrong ones. Thanks again!

Gregg

Usually parts are not needed...but, take a look at the needle. If it looks grooved or worn, deep six it and get new ones. Or, spring for the kit and eliminate the possibility of worn parts causing the problem....But, go back and soak the carb again anyway, then blow it out with compressed air. Sometimes it takes two or three times before you can dissolve the varnish or debris.

The key with the fittings is to make sure you have mated pairs. Some fittings look like they belong together, but are not designed for each other.

Gregg,
We use the compressed air blown OPPOSITE the direction of normal flow.....The small holes where fuel is metered are not easily cleaned without using micro drill bits matching the jet diameter....You start with the smaller bits until you reach one that takes out the varnish BUT NOT any more material.
If your ball goes soft while running then you have an air leak or bad fuel pump/diaghram assy.
You can also verify the high speed jet(s) is(are)working by removing the air baffle and watching for a nice spray of fuel from all carbs.A timing light hooked to any spark plug wire and 12 volt will make this really easy to see!
Tim Mattson
Sorensen Marine

Thanks Tim. I will do ask told. I have one question for you guys. The plastic fitting coming out of the carb which the fuel hose connects to has a crack in it. I couldn't figure out how to remove/replace it without using force. For the temporary I expoxyed the crack. What do i do?

Thanks again all!!
Gregg

You can buy another carb...That part of the carb is not replaceable or just do what you did.

Re: Nissan 40c problems some more

I have a problem very similar to this one with my NS55B. I have had in in the shop, had the carbs rebuilt, replaced all of the fuel lines, and plugs. I have been trying to locate a service manual for the NS55B with no luck. I am interested in Art B's repair. I would like to know where you found the correct fittings, and what the part numbers were. I'm sure the ones that are on my boat are from WalMart, because I have seen them there when I was looking to replace mine. The part does not mention Nissan on the applicable boats.

It was easy. I bought a new tank to engine fuel line (including primer bulb) from Internet Outboards (Elvin). This was a last resort since I had done all the things you have done. Lo and behold, something was obviously remiss when the tank fitting on the new line didn't fit the one on the tank. Fortunately, I was able to get the right fitting for the tank at a local boat shop where they just happened to have one for a Nissan. If, perchance, you have a similar problem and can't find the right parts locally, contact Internet Outboards: www.internetoutboards.com

Re: Nissan 40c problems some more

OK so I finally gave up trying to fix the engine myself, especially since I am an amatuer. So I found out my uncle's buddy is a boat mechanic and he agreed to work on it.

He changed the carb, ignition coil, and tuned. I am taking it out this weekend to see how it runs.

Thanks
