Nissan 40C poor idle

Have had ongoing rough idle problem for years. If I use carb cleaner and clean the plugs, it has a smooth idle for a short time. It then returns to rough idle with new carbon deposits on plugs. Am using new NGK B7HS plugs gapped to factory specs (1.0 mm) and 50/1 fuel mix with Penzoil Marine premium 2-cycle oil. Engine has been dealer tuned but problem persists. How about a hotter or colder plug? Any other suggestions?

You shouldn't need a hotter plug on that one. What's the compression running on the cylinders?

Art,

It really sounds like it is a fuel feed issue. I think....And this is based on the repeated carb cleaning that you have been doing. I think you have three possible problems:

1) Your not running the gas out of the engine when your done running the engine and the residual fuel is evaporating rather quickly.

2) Your fuel supply is suspect. That could be anything from junk in the tank to junk in the fuel line.

3) The carb isn't getting clean....It's just getting washed.

My WAG is that your not soaking the carb(or the shop isn't) long enough to completely disolve the varnish in the passages. If your using spray cleaner that's a waste of time as the stuff isn't strong enough to do any good. A good three to five hour soak in carb cleaner is usually what it takes to really remove the crap. Even then you sometimes have to do it again. You may also have a problem with the ignition system( but, I doubt it). It might even be as simple as the air mixture screw being a little too rich....Although a tech should be able to get that right if they any kind of ear for engines, individuals often have a hard time finding the sweet spot.
