Nissan 40C and Hustler Prop Questions

I recently purchased the old style Hustler prop and hub kit from iBoats. I sent the following email to both iBoats and Turning Point, but would like input from readers, here as well. Thanks.

______________________________________
Dear Sirs:

I received the below items this last week. I examined them this weekend and did a test fit to my Nissan 40C outboard. I have a couple of questions:

1) The advertisement on the iBoat website for the specific prop I bought, mentions having ventalation holes. I could not find any on this prop. I was expecting to find a total of three small holes, one near the front edge of each blade. Do I have a manufacturing defect? or has it been determined that none are provided for this engine? I was expecting to get a better hole shot from having them.

2) When I test fitted the prop, the thick thrust washer slides on the splines, and when it gets all the way to the beveled part of the shaft, it is able to spin on the shaft. Is that correct? The OEM thrust washer is larger (thicker) and still engages the splines, such that it can't spin on the shaft. I doesn't seem right to me that it spins.

Thanks, and I look forward to receiving any input you can provide.

Re: Nissan 40C and Hustler Prop Questions

JohnS

I have had one for a year now.
Must admit No Holes in mine. The expulsion of exhaust seems to be sufficient, as it never chokes the engine.

When fitting the Thrust washer did you use the Original? I did and it sits neatley on the splines and will not spin. If it spins you may geta Clutch effect. But I am not up on Mechanics so I am only guessing. Sorry I was not much help but only went by my own experience. Only been boating a year.....

P@ul...

Huntersbane,

The Hustler prop looks to have the similar exhaust area as the OEM. The vent holes are just to provide some ventilation to get the motor upto speed, more into powerband. From your comment, it sounds like it is a listed feature, but only comes on a few select props.

The Hustler directions did not indicate reusing the OEM thrust washer. There was two new ones, both significantly different from oem, in the hub box. One for 40C (my engine) and one for the the 3 cyl (40D?) and 50 hp models.

BTW, I received a reply from iBoats, to please contact the manufacturer, and they provided a phone number. Since I copied Turning Point on the original email, maybe have something in the reader, tonight. Otherwise will try contacting via phone.

Re: Nissan 40C and Hustler Prop Questions

After two emails to Turning Point and no response, I called them today. Excellent phone service! The tech went and pulled a 17A hub and we discussed my issue. Even put an engineer on the phone for awhile. I will follow-up with an email with photos to the TP engineer.

BTW, the vents are only on larger engine props. TP says they do not provide much enhancement on these small motors, and may cause more issues, such as too much slip, and vibration.
