Nissan 40 hp shift linkage adjustment?

I have a Nissan 40 hp (tag on the outside reads NS40C 361a-1 54615). I received this boat after it had been setting for some time. Got it running good and started to use it. I noticed the reverse was grinding into gear, even when I shifted "swiftly and smoothly" as I had read in another post. Forward bumps in perfectly but serveral rides later after getting hot, it seemed to pop out of gear. I checked the prop out of the water and with the outboard in forward the prop clicks one way and locks the other as it should, but revers locks both ways. This lead me to believe that either the unit needs to be adjusted or it's just warn. My question to you is how can I adjust the linkage to the lower unit? As well as any other advise you can give me.

I have changed the gear oil in the unit as well. Old oil was a little dirty but no water.

The lower unit rod linkage is fixed, probably the holder shift lever stopper is out of adjustment, check, correct. This part has a spring ball that engages against 3 small holes to position and lock when shifting forward, neutral, reverse, it's located at stopper plate shift lever side that mounts on top of shift lever.

Move lever to forward and check if ball rests in middle hole, if not, free side nuts and move stopper sideways untill ball matches middle hole, tight nuts back. Once forward is aligned, all other holes will align correctly. If stopper stops right, you have a gear box issue.

And you may already have a worn clutch dog or R gear.

I see where the shift lever stopper was, and even where the ball used to slide on the bracket. but i guess because I have center console steering, the stopper has been removed? Doesn't seem right. But I am no expert. Also if I was to need a dog clutch or reverse gear, are those parts available? where? cheapest...

Yep, you have some missing parts. No, there was no reason to remove that when rigging remote steering. But... the lack of the shift detent will not cause chattering going into reverse. Something is probably amiss in the LU. All the parts, including the LU parts are available from any dealer (including me). I would disassemble the LU and inspect the gears and clutch dog. While in there, and everything is apart, consider re-sealing the LU (the seal kit is available), and, since you will have the LU down, and the WP off, definitely inspect/replace the WP kit at the same time.
