Sometimes when I push the starter button nothing happens, although the battery connection is good because the power trim and tilt is operative. Usually the problem with the starter button is accompanied by a failure of the shift lever to go into reverse. The engine will always pull start. Occasionally the starter will operate with a push of the button. Is this a linkage issue? Any other thoughts?

Re: nissan 30hp 4-stroke

Sounds identical to the problem I'm having with my 2001 15hp Mercury. There is a micro switch that contacts the throttle linkage cam. A high point on the cam 'closes' the switch when it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. The switch has an arm with a small roller on the end which dropped lower than designed and caught on the cam, keeping me in forward or reverse sometimes. Even in neutral, the cam would not always depress the switch all the way. Only when the planets aligned would it turn over. Mercury must've had a problem with them cause now the replacement is a plunger type switch. I just found a similar one at Radio Shack for $2.83, refusing to allow Mercury to extort $40 from me!! Good Luck, LP.
