When I turn the key there only a clicking sound. First thought was the battery but the trim-n-tilt works and my other 30(twin's) starts fine. It will pull start and run so I think that would rule out the neutral switch(where is it located anyways?). Pulled and reset the kill switch lanyards, look's ok - is there a way to test these? Is there a way to test the starter? There was a faint smell of electrical smoke when trying to start. Any ideas appreciated.

You should run this engine by a dealer if you have smoke....That's a bad thing.

It sounds like the starter is frozen in place. if you can get to it (my 9.8 starter was easy to take off) take it off. once you have it off try spinning it free hand. it should turn freely. Check all your connections and scrape off the green crust if there is any. unhook battery first! the electrical smell is the current trying to get through to the load. It is encountering too much resistance either through a hung up starter or a bad connection and heating up. look at the solenoid if it is sealed it probably isn't the problem but if moisture can get to it then it might be corroded.
