2002 bought new manual start. 2003 added an el. starter. is there anything i can do to get it to charge the battery. Looks like it has an alt. & rectifier. is it a electrical connection or do i need to add a part.

I don't know if Im understanding why your system isn't charging your battery but maybe I can help. From the alternator coil under the flywheel a/c voltage is produced. This then gets sent to the recitfier where its converted to d/c. There should be a red fused wire from the rec. that makes its way to your solenoid. From this point you should receive your output to charge your battery. If I am wrong I apologize, but this is how its ran on my 02 25hp nissan 4-stroke electric start. Nissan's website also has a wiring diagram showing a visual of all this. Im sure some of the forum's other members can better direct you as this is rather new to me. good luck

I will check my wiring diagram. Where i'm confused is, does the charge come from the battery cables or do I need to add a charging wire? I've tested and found no voltage at the cables.

If equipped with charging, the rectifier output appears on the battery cables. If you run the motor without any battery connected, you run the risk of burning out the rectifier. This is the case for most outboard charging systems. I would make sure the battery is properly connected, and check for charging by taking an ammeter reading.

If not charging, refer to the service manual (available from a dealer) for troubleshooting. The alternator itself makes AC; the rectifier converts it to DC for charging. You should also find a 20-amp fuse in the system, which can be blown if the battery has been connected backwards.
