I just purchased a used Nissan 3.5A 2 stroke outboard. It runs great but has a scraping noise when I turn over the engine before starting it. It is more like a clatter when the engine is idling and the noise is less noticeable as the RPMs go up. At idle it also shakes a bit like something is off balance. Otherwise it runs fine.
My guess is that it is a bearing but I can't imagine that a bearing could be that bad to make so much noise and not break apart.
Any suggestions to what this might be are appreciated. Also, any words of encouragement or a suggestion on where to start if I were to start dismantling the engine to find the problem.
