I have a Nissan 3.5hp 2003, it shifter is really hard to move into forward position and back. Even then the propeller still spin freely when I tried to spin it by hand.
Would you know what is wrong and how I can fix it.
Thank you very much.

We need the actual model, not year. Year is irrelevant. Probably an NS3.5B. The shift rod joint may not be adjusted correctly. And the shift lever may need lubrication. In addition, you may have a sheared pin inside the prop.

Thank you for the info. It was a broken shear pin problem just as you described. I just replaced it.

The model is NS3 5B2 3F0-1 .

I tried to get WD40 into the area around the shifter but I got no luck. It is still hard to shift.

That shaft has 2 o-rings, and should have been greased from the factory. There is also a ceramic ball detent with a spring that holds it in either N or F. You may want to lubricate it, but if so, don't lose the spring and ball, and expect to need new o-rings:

Remove carying handle to work better inside if you please, Remove outer shift rod cover, remove rod screw from plastic shift lever. Apply an overdose of W40 to the entire mechanism, while moving lever back and forth pull it out. Can help pull with a big screwdriver pushing the other side of lever out. Clean and grease with water grease all related parts and assemble back.

When OB is used on salt water, salt could make lever to slide hard or even jam the entire mechanism, patience along some cold ones will be needed for a successful removal.

I went as far as removing the carrying handle, taking off the shift lever cover, then apply a liberal amount of brake cleaner, wd40, lubricant but the shifter was still hard to move back and forth. The diagram looks a bit complicated so I didn't dare to remove the screw and take out the whole lever. :(

The screw is only for shift rod lever (5) to hold onto shift lever (1) if removing screw nothing will happen, I know is a super PITA taking shift lever out, been there myself some times. Shift mechanism should be lubbed from time to time for a correct smooth operation, once seized due to old grease, dirt, salt water use, you're almost done.

What need to do is to squirt whatever product is indicated on the internal/external bushing area to free it and pull it out. While shifting lever back and forth and out, lever with a big flat screwdriver the shift lever end out. Will need to remove screw for that. Before greasing and sliding shift lever in, clean and file gently the internal metal bushing to a smooth cond. No need to change both rubber o'rings, use old ones will be better molded to internal bushing.

Before I give it another try, please let me know if I understand the procedure correctly.

1. remove the carrying handle
2. remove lever cover, parts 8,9,10,11
3. remove lever screw, parts 6,7
4. try to remove lever handle (part 1) using outward motion plus back and forth motion
5. the ball, spring, and two o rings (part 2, 3 4) may fall out so I need to catch them when they do
6. after the lever is out, try to clean and grease the lever housing before putting everything back

did I miss anything?

BTW, I should also added that normally it was hard to move. I have to hold on to the lower end of the shift lever to be able to move it. Otherwise I felt like I could break the handle with so much force. Then, there are time when the lever seem to jam stuck and I can do to move it anymore.
Thanks,

The purpose of removing carrying handle (2 side botls/nuts) is for a better tool accessibility to remove both (6) cover bolts and work on shift mechanism under cover.

-OK on 1-2-3
-Try levering against lateral wall shift lever extreme out while doing 4.
-Once shift lever begins to exit, lever it at bushing side to make a much easy removal from bushing.
-Place a towel under shift lever for spring and ball to fall there. Will see both while lever is on its way out.
-Once out, remove both black o'rings, sand/file gently shift lever body (rod portion) and bushing to a perfect smooth touch cond.
-Put O'rings back on body.
-Grease well all rotating sliding parts with water grease as OMC Triple Guard Grease or equivalent.

On 2.5/3.5 engines it's much better to hold onto lower shift lever portion while gearing than on thin upper portion. If it's too stuck will eventualy break lever which will be bad music. Once shift mechanism is working smoothly will be able to shift at upper portion with fingers. Good Luck!!

If still won't budge, send OB to a Tohatsu dealer...

No Title

It took a lot of courage (something that I have less and less the older I became) to follow through the process, but I did it.

The remove of the lever is one which would test one's patience to the extreme. For my case, no matter how hard I grabbed onto the lever and juggled it, it wouldn't give. The thing just stuck like glue inside the bushing. At the end I used a flat screw driver and wedged it in between the lever and the its housing. I use a small hammer to gently tap the screw driver in little by little and it finally drove the shift lever out of its housing.

And Sea Rider is completely right, the lever is extremely dirty with a lot of sands in it. No wonder why it was so hard to shift. I cleaned up the lever, its housing and applied plenty of grease to both of them. Now it is working like a champ.

Thank you for all your help.

Good to read that worked , you're a pro. That assembly should be disassembled, cleaned and greased from time to time, letting lever seize on bushing it's the worst thing to happen. Next time need to pull it out will be a breeze doing so.
