Nissan 25hp does this sound like the solution???

While running at wot I slowed down and the motor was making a chattering noise and then shut off.I pulled the cowling off and got a wiff like something is/was getting hot. I was able to get it started andtook my time back to the boat ramp. <br /> Tonight after getting home from work I started looking into it to see what I could find.Did all the basic checks. after lookin for awhile I finally find where I think the thermostat is and pull the cover off pull the thermostat out and look down the holes,one looks like it has grass/weeds inside it. I start digging this crap out, wow what a mess. I think I got it all out. At first I could barely get compressed air through and once I was done no problem. <br /> Does it sound like I probably solved my problem??

As far as the burning smell...if the cooling passages are closed off...you probably did some good. But, that would not cause a chattering sound unless the engine had really overheated to the point of probable engine damage. You need to do a compression check now. You will also need to make sure that your waterpump is working at full capacity.
