Re: Nissan 1986 5hp NS5B Propeller Size

Robin,

There is a whole range of props for that motor. There is also a "mouse ear" high-thrust sailboat prop available, which may work on the Stargazer...

See the prop chart at http://www.tohatsu.com/accessories/prop.html

Any dealer (including myself) can supply a prop. But, knowing the correct prop for your setup is only speculation. You must do a little trial and error. You want to get as close as possible to the factory WOT RPM, without exceeding it. For a heavy dinghy, such as the Stargazer, the EE prop is a good choice. Good low-speed torque, but limited top end.

How do I tell what I have right now? Is there a marking somewhere? Is the EE the same as the "mouse ear" ? where do I see them or can you send me a link. Thanks again Capt. Rob of StarGazer I

Rob,

Anything over 1500 pounds is considered "heavy". Your best prop will be the 3-blade high thrust ("mouse ear" or "elephant ear") prop. There should be cast-in markings on the current prop, either on the back of a blade, or on the hub between blades. Regardless, there is no other prop that comes close for sailboats. It's stock on the 6 hp sailpro model for just that reason. The last page (p4) of the 2-6 hp brochure http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/brochure_pdfs/2012_brochure/Toh2012_2-6.pdf has a small picture of that prop. If you'd like one, they are available from any dealer (including me). You would order 399B645121 PROP 4/5/6HP, 8.375" DIA X 6" PITCH (ELEPHANT EAR) $145.83. We sell a lot of them. In fact, should you one day want to retire the old M5B 2-smoke motor, the ultra-long (25") sailpro would be a great choice, as it comes stock with that prop, and also has charging capability.
