I’m hoping Elvin (or anybody) can answer two questions. I have a 2002 Nissan NSF18BEF1 that has as estimated 300 hours of running time. How soon should the camshaft drive belt be replaced? Also, is this an interference engine (piston to valve contact)? I use my boat on lakes in very remote areas and sometimes don’t see anybody else on the water for several days. I’m considering keeping a spare belt on hand but if I break one and this is an interference engine I’d probably be out of luck anyway.

Thanks in advance,
Bruce

Re: Nissan 18hp 4-stroke

I would just inspect the belt every 50 hours or so. They are supposed to be replaced every 500? hours or so. No one does. It might last 3000 or more hours. Just lookout for any cracks. And yes it is. That doesn't mean you will have damage, but it could happen. While I am sure someone knows someone who has had a belt break, it is very rare and not something to worry about.
