I have a 2005 Nissan 18 HP four stroke with about twenty properly broke in hours. Since new I have had a problem on start-up. About 60% of starts the oil light will not go out, or it will go off after the computer finishes its check, then it will come on again. I always shut down the engine quickly when this happens. But, if I restart the engine it always behaves normally. I am an aircraft mechanic and I am big on preventitive maintenance. I changed the oil and filter after five hours, then chaanged them both again after ten hours. I run the motor at half throttle, and I treat it very gently. After break-in I began using Amsoil oil. It dosn't smoke, use, or leak oil. The engine is fine except this weird oil light problem. I really don't think it is an actuall oil pressure problem, but I could be wrong. The water that is expelled from the engine is never really hot, just warm. This tells me that the engine isn't running hot due to poor lubrication. Any help would be appreciated.

It could be the sensor, bad CD, bad ground, a kink in the oil line under the powerhead or the oil screen(under the powerhead) could be stopped up. Since the engine is under warranty you should take it in and let your local authorized dealer figure it out.

Problem solved! It was the oil pressure sending unit. It took about three minutes for the maintenance tech to trouble shoot with my explanation. He duplicated the problem, changed the sending unit, and it was ready to go. I took the motor to H2O Sports in Sherwood, Arkansas. Larry did a great job.d:)

Re: Nissan 18 HP 4-Stroke Oil Light Problem

The problem is back. The repair shop said that they would do what ever it took to make it right. The mechanic stated that there is a oil check valve that may be allowing oil to bypass thus resulting in prime lost. He advised me to change the oil and filter, and try Mercury synthetic blend; of which I did. I found metal fragments in the dained oil. This concerned me. The weird thing is that the outboard runs great. I think that this problem is a fluke. I would by another Nissan in a minute, but I kinda wish I had bought the 20 horse Honda now. Any feedback would be welcomed.:/

Your back to the original five possibilities minus one. Just take it back to them and have them call Tohatsu.
