I have an 18 hp Nissan 2 stroke NS18C2. I am getting hesitation when running high speed. It runs perfectly on low speed. I have new plugs and have cleaned the fuel screen. A neighbour suggests the high speed jet needs cleaning. How do I go about doing this? I searched on line for info on this motor but have come up empty.

Risus,

I have a '97 18E, but haven't had that issue. It is probably worth getting the Clymer manual. FWIW, I've had two different Nissan dealers tell me NOT to get the Nissan manual. I'll be ordering one soon. I plan to change the impeller this fall, but have had no issues myself yet. I think your symptom could also be timing issue. If you haven't already, you might find some good info in the "general" outboard forum.

Risus,

This sounds like a fuel-related problem to me and quite possibly the high-speed jet. If it were mine, I'd try a fuel additive like SeaFoam in an attempt to clean it out. This might also be caused by a fuel pump problem or partially plugged fuel filter/screen. You should try squeezing the primer bulb at wide-open throttle to see if the problem clears up. Otherwise, a truly plugged high-speed jet could mean the carburetor would need to be disassembled for cleaning. This is best handled by someone of higher than average mechanical ability.

FYI - The Nissan manual that I have for this engine does not cover carburetor disassembly. The Clymer manual will.

Good luck,
Bruce

Yes, SeaFoam has been around for years and can be found at automotive parts stores, hardware stores, and most marine dealers. FYI - there are other brands out there with a similar quality product too. Their web site lists some specific retailers that might be in your area.

http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUpTechDiesel.htm

Good luck,
Bruce
