Have an 86? eninrude, 55hp that runs ruff at idle and will not reach full rpm at full throtle. Acts like the engine is smothering, carbs have just been reworked. Also is burning the hot post out of the coil. 1st boat I've owned so I now about as much about engines as I do quantum physics. any advice is welcome. Model# 55ESL69A, Serial# J3006286

Re: Niles

I suggest that you fit a new coil,Electricity will always follow the path of least resistance. if the coil post is burnt out sparks have been passing from the coil to earth. fit a new coil and lead, clean all connections and I think that all should be well.

Re: Niles

First lets look at what motor you have. Is it a 2 cylinder 1986 or a 3 cylinder 1969? Since you mention "coil" and not "coils" it may be a 69 which matches your model number.

They have totally different ignition systems. Before we lead you in the wrong direction, tell us more about your motor.

Good thing you put the model number in there. Wish everybody did.

Good luck!

marinshopen.se says
55ES69-55ESL69 55 HP 1969 Johnson

This german site says
55ESL6 Johnson 1969 55HP @ 5000 RPM 49.7 cu.in. = 814.4 ccm 3 cylinder.

Bear

Re: Niles

Dhadly, you are correct. It is a 1969 3 cyl. engine. I posted the topic in complete ingnorance since this is the 1st boat I have owned. I have also learned the hard way to seek professional guidance when purchasing a used boat and motor. Here is the deal,
The useless !@#$% moron I bought it from had removed a bad power pack and the coil and GOD knows what else and put a car coil and condensor on the engine so it would start at the time of sale.
I have, with great reluctance, purchased both and installed them per instructions.
When the switch is on, I can hear the power pak clicking but still have no fire at the plugs. Suggestions?
Note to those who know less than I do:
GET IT CHECKED BEFORE YOU BUY IT!
