Nike Jet in Trouble

A NIKE corporate jet with 7 persons aboard including senior execs has landing gear problems and is now circling Portland Airport at 10am PST to lose fuel before attempting emergency landing. I'm watching it live on local news and will update when they land. They have been circling since takeoff at 7:15 am today.

I'm watching live shots on CNN, FOX, CNBC. <br /><br />This is the Gulfstream 5's initial inauguaral flight (a brand new $45 million dollar jet with senior execs aboard). At 10:50 am PST the plane still has an estimated 3 hours of fuel on board. It will land at Portland Airport when it is time to land due to the best emergency services.<br /><br />The local Fox affiliate is doing the best coverage with both air and ground cameras at all airports. The NIKE pilot can't get the right landing gear up or down beyond 45 degrees. The nose and left landing gear are fully down while they attempt to burn off fuel. <br /><br />Hillsboro airport (10 miles west of Portland, Oregon) is the plane's home where the NIKE jet is stationed and took off from at 7:15 am PST this morning. The pilot has gone went back to Hillsboro and attempted 2-3 touch and goes to try to knock the right landing gear back down. I learned to fly at the same airport.

I live under the area where they say they're burning off fuel...I think I just saw it fly by!<br /><br />"FAA says no stars on board"...Great, that's the first thing I worried about. <br /><br />I know the son of a Nike big wig...hope his dad's not up there.

I guess they just did a high G manuever and may have freed up the gear according to the news.<br /><br />The pilot just radioed that they will land at Hillsboro and then proceed to their hanger.

....where all aboard will receive a fresh pair of shorts prior to meeting with press. <br /><br /> BTW nice to see the "LIVE" TV people disappointed by a non tragic ending. So much for thier ratings.

Just in at the NIKE press conference, <br /><br />According to the NIKE president, they went up to 20,000 feet, shut off the left engine to force all the hydraulic power/pressure to the right side of the plane and then did various twists and turns which worked to drop the right gear down. The Zero G efforts did not work.<br /><br />This was not a new plane, just a new plane for NIKE.

I find this kind of funny now...the plane has been down nearly an hour and nothing happened, but thank god the news still has wall to wall coverage of people standing next to the plane! <br /><br />The local fox station is getting prank calls from people claiming to be family members and experts. One of them just said something obscene live on the air...
