I threw some soapy water on the ground once and when I happened to look about 5 minutes later there were about 15 nightcrawlers almost galloping away from the spot, they hated that soap. I don't know how good they would be for bait or even if they live or not. Whenever it rains hard enough to drive nightcrawlers out of the ground to where they are all over the streets, for the next week or so you can find billions of them in the gutters wherever sand and leaves and junk have managed to settle out and not get washed down the drain. Re: nightcrawlers

Nightcrawlers are awesome live bait...practically all I use unless fishing strictly for panfish. Then I pinch 'em in half. ;)

One of my New years resolutions was to use my lures more this year as I prefer live bait over lures.

Anyway, pick 'em up when they're out, put 'em in a tupperware container with plenty of potting soil and keep 'em in the 'fridge and you'll have lots of good bait. They'll last as long as you need them. We have a pet box turtle that has a steady diet of nightcrawlers, so there's a tub of worms in our fridge year 'round.

Re: nightcrawlers

I wish we had nightcrawlers that thick here in southern Illinois. Wal-Mart sells them for almost $3.00 for 2 dozen.

I buy 10 to 20 dozen and put them in a plastic bucket with a ventalated top and fill with damp worm bedding and worm food. I keep this bucket in the bottom compartment of my fridge in the garage.

I go through a lot of nightcrawlers during the summer and I am always buying more and adding them to the bucket.

It would be good to hear how other folks keep thier nightcrawlers alive and kicking....

During fall and before frost I dig a hole in my garden and put what I have left in there but we just don't see many nightcrawlers here.....

Re: nightcrawlers

I bought my first boat ( a 12' aluminum Monarch) brand new about 35 years ago (already??) with the money I made picking night crawlers. I got .25c a dozen from my dad who sold em in his store for .75c a dozen. Warm, rainy nights were money makers for me.

Down here in the south, they're also known as "fiddleworms". After a rain, we'll drive a stake in the ground and rub a flat board across it, or pull a handsaw across it, sending vibrations into the ground. If they are shallow enough, the nightcrawlers come up out of the ground. This is called "fiddling" them out of the ground. Absolutely great catfish bait!

Re: nightcrawlers

When we lived in Colorado I had a electronic worm probe that really worked good. It was just two probes that you stuck into the ground and turned it on and the shock would bring them out.

Some how when we moved to Illinois I lost it and haven't been able to find another. I have checked all the big fishing stores and they don't have it.

Like your signature Holimhook. I am retired from the Army......

Does anyone know how to copy a photo from your computer and place it on here ?? I tried to copy the link location and place it on the Avatar thing but it doesn't work......

Thanks

Re: nightcrawlers

When I was a kid, a neighbor down the street (old catfisher) used to have a metal rod (rebar)connected to a car battery that worked real good. My Dad was never in favor of this though so We went out at night with flashlights and picked 'em up by the dozens. Don't know if the battery thing is/was illegal or not, just always remember the old man frowning upon "electric fiddling"

Re: nightcrawlers

I used to order nightcrawlers from a place in Canada by the pound. I would get from 5 to 10 lbs at a time, which is a lot of nightcrawlers but you have to keep them cool during the hot summer days we get here.

JT I have all my photos in Yahoo but when I go to my profile, edit my profile, avatar image, and try to copy and paste the photo link there it will not take it. My son who is pretty comp. savy could not get it to work either....so don't know.....Thanks

Re: nightcrawlers

They used to pack nightcrawlers in buckets that looked exactly like cottage cheese packs. I had nightmares about getting the two mixed up. Now you can, too. If crawlers seem scarce in your neighborhood, sneak out to your local golf course just before sunrise. The greens should be crawling with 'em. Just don't get caught. Any moist lawn used to produce crawlers, but our extensive use of pesticides has cut production considerably.

--------------------
You kill it, you eat it!
