2 weeks ago, I went to my local auto parts store ?Square Speed? and ordered a roller rocker and a hydraulic lifter for my ?96 Merc Grand Marquee. I also wanted a 10 mm, 3/8 drive deep socket of which he didn?t have in stock, he said something to another customer and that customer asked me what length socket I wanted. He went out to his truck and came back with 3 different length Proto sockets for me to choose from. He asked that I return the socket to Jay the next day even if I break it because the socket is guaranteed. I have never met this gentleman before and I can tell you that if the situation were reversed, I would not have been so generous.

Last week I spent the better part of a vacation day on my back changing my exhaust system from the cat back on my ?98 Merc Mountaineer, If I wasn?t so fat and old I could have done it in half the time. One inlet on the muffler just didn?t want to seal. I moved the clamp to 3 different positions with no luck. Yesterday I decided to have the pipe welded, and since I don?t know how to weld, I took the truck to Meineke in Levittown. The shop was very busy but things were getting done, 15 minutes later I was on my way. I asked the owner what the charge was and he responded just ?take care of the mechanic?. How often can you find a shop like that.

Originally, I went to a repair shop that I have previously had substantial work done and decided not to have the exhaust done because parts alone were over $600. I purchased the parts for $205. Meineke would have charged me $235. parts & labor, so I traded my effort sweat and vacation time for $30.

Re: Nice guys

Just goes to show you that there are still decent people out there.

I got my wife a jet ski a couple of months ago as she had been asking for one. When we went to the ramp to let her try it out, ahe loaded up and I sent her on her way. There was another fellow there on his brand new $12,000 Wave Runner. I mentioned that it was her first time out on the ski and he offered his ski up to me so I could ride along side of her! I had never met this guy before and his Yamaha was brand new and here he was offering it to a stranger. I politely declined but we sat and chatted for a half hour. Nice people everywhere. Makes meeting the occasional jerk not so bothersome anymore.

The world is full of people just looking for an excuse to do a good deed. Let a natural disaster or catastrophe occur and they come 'arunning. It's even better when you encounter them on an everyday basis. And then to top it off there are the "pay it forward" kind of people. Yeah, there's the other kind too, but we won't talk about them.

Re: Nice guys

I own a business and do little favors all the time for people. Good advertising as well as just creating good carma. We ran out of TP and garbage bags at the cabin yesterday so we stopped at the liquor store because they also sell some odds and ends. They had none but she offered up a couple roles and bags of her own. I thanked her, declined the offer, but bought a case of beer I otherwise wouldn't have. I can tell you I will buy all future cabin booze from them.

Just remember, people who do things for you and don't want anything in return are the same ones who make this a better place to live. Just pay it forward to someone else who might need it and all is squared up.

Re: Nice guys

I do free upholstery repairs all the time and I usually get rewarded with surprise bottles of alcohol! What I want to know is what people read about me on a first meeting that says Crown Royal, Vodka, or Captain Morgan are my best forms of payment??? (...not that I'm really complaining...)

But what that does tell me is that instead of just opening a wallet, they went out of their way to stop and purchase something, including a gift bag, and then made the return trip to my shop days later just to say thanks! There are still good people out there.

Re: Nice guys

Kindness and courtesy can be contagious. I wish it would spread faster than it does.

There is a stretch of US 30 in our town that is under construction. Just before both lanes is reduced to a single lane there is an entrance ramp. Traffic wasn't moving very fast, maybe 15mph at the best. I watched the entrance ramp line up with cars and stopping just waiting for the chance to merge in. For a quarter a mile or better, nobody ahead of me opened up a space large enough to let anyone in. So I started slowing way down to let a gap grow between me and the person in front. As I got close to the entrance ramp, I flashed my headlights. This did get 3 cars to merge in and they all waved at me as in saying thanks. I looked behind me and low and behold others did the same thing.

I always try to help or give a hand when I can as someday I may need it in return.

I live about 5 towns east of you in Babylon. All too rare for our neck of the woods.
Good to hear and better to experience!

Re: Nice guys

I agree Woodnaut; I was more than happy to help out a stranded boater this past weekend. I am not trying to toot my own horn; it just made me feel good that I was able to help. I know if I was on the other end, I would have been praying for someone to help.

My daughter and I had just pulled up to the local marina to have lunch. We had just tied off when two ladies and a little boy approached us and stated that their family was stranded out in the middle of the lake because their motor over-heated and they needed someone to tow them in.

So we untied and headed out to find them, as we got closer it looked like they had run aground. But as we got closer I realized that the boat was just leaning because all three guys were on one side of the boat trying to claim the shade. We grabbed their tow line and pulled them back to the dock safely.

It made my 7 year old daughter feel very good that we helped someone. Not only did I feel good because I was able to help, but I felt even better that my daughter saw this and that it made her feel good.
