Re: Nhl hockey!!!!!!!!
If I were to give it a shot I think it would look like this
26 teams in 1993 and 30 now, better hockey but 50% of current TV revenue and player salaries at 40% of where they are now, yes you still have a team in Quebec (current population under 600,000). On the plus side you still have a Canadian League, for that matter you may still get that in the future, it remains to be seen how the US will support the NHL after this last Lockout, but when you have multiple professional Hockey leagues throughout the world, the NHL is finding itself in troubled waters, its harder to clearly define the league above the others each time we have a lockout, imagine how hard that would have been without the large TV contract, which is directly related to player salaries, imagine if the NHL couldn't afford to pay those salaries and the KHL became the dominant Professional Hockey league in the world...
Guys I'm not trying to say I am a Bettman guy but I am not a Player Union guy, I love Hockey, and I am sorry to see hard times for Canadian teams in Canadian cities, but if you put another team in Quebec I bet it does no better then the previous team did, sometimes a good team but never a contender, they simply could not pay for enough talent, not enough money, one Canadian player spelled doom for the Nordiques ONE PLAYER, and its not his fault either, he simply made their situation clear for the world to see.
Now if you put the same situation in our side of the border I am with you, for the most part but I have a hard time when you try to compare Phoenix(4,000,000) with Winnipeg(700,000) or Denver(3,000,000) with Quebec City(500,000), because when Bettmen came into the league the NHL was almost solely driven by box office sales, League revenue was $400 million dollars, now League revenue is $3.3 Billion dollars because he brought big markets and National TV into the league, meanwhile no other Professional Sports League has been hit nearly as hard as the NHL in work stoppages, the NHL gives its players more then any other league, the latest agreement gives players 50% of revenues(down from 57%), NFL is 47% a league where revenues are more then 3 times as large and 33 teams, there are more Hockey players then there are Football players since Football is North American ONLY, Hockey is a Northern Hemisphere sport that Canadian Players dominate in but as in all Professional sports Money rules, without Bettman would the NHL be better then the KHL? I don't know but I don't think so.
BP I appreciate Canada being sore about losing the Nordiques but come on they couldn't sign Lindros and that had nothing to do with Bettman, Lindros was the nail in Quebec's coffin.
Sorry guys I will shut up now.
