I have a 1968 20hp Mercury and I went to the auto parts store this morning to pick up some new plugs. I asked for the champion plugs which Mercury recomends. Well al they had were the NGK version of the champion plugs I needed. Heres my question can I use these plugs i'm pretty sure I can. What effects do think the plugs will have on my engine what's your expeirence with these plugs?

Re: NGK plugs

I love NGK, they are superior to the Champions in my opinion.
My 1991 90HP Merc came factory with NGK's.

Re: NGK plugs

Ignition systems on outboards are designed around a specific plug so run what the manufacturer specifies. Cross-reference charts are just that -- "this" plug is "almost" like that one. They are not 100% identical. There is one exception -- if you are having a unique performance issue related to the way you operate your boat, then and only then is a change of plug recommended. For example if you troll for hours on end and rarely if ever run wide open, a plug with a hotter heat range may be called for. Do not change plugs with the intent of getting more power or speed. You risk screwing up a perfectly good engine. The factory has done the research for you. All of that said, chances are the NGKs won't hurt anything -- provided the young sprout at the counter read the cross-reference chart correctly. That's an entirely different topic and I won't go there.

Re: NGK plugs

I switched my Merc. to NGK 3 years ago. Less fouling, smoother running. Most mechanics recommend NGK. I have a 200 hp carbed 8 year old engine.
