Ok. Windows.000 is gone but the original windows won't open, so I will just run the original restore discs.

Does anyone know how to partition the harddrive? It seems with 2000 and XP they give you the option when doing a fresh load. I don't think that running the restore discs will give me that chance.

1st, you can't boot win98, and are just getting dumped at the C:\> prompt right?
If so, can you boot it if you do this:

C:\>cd windows
C:\WINDOWS\>win

Does that start up windows?

PS - no point in repartioning your drive unless you don't like how it's partioned now.

Re: Next Case!

Paul, it has no partitions. I like to have one to keep my data on. That way, if I have to diddle with the OS, then I don't have to backup data, search for new downloads etc. Now when I do the restore, I'll lose all of my various 'downloaded programs'. I have no way to back them up, as 98 wouldn't read my mini cruzer usb drive doo dad.

After deleting .000, the original won't boot, using your method. all kinds of files missing incl, himem.sys.

Re: Next Case!

For the sake of speeding things up a bit, and ressurecting the old windows, try this:

C:\>cd windows
C:\WINDOWS>ren win.old win.com
C:\WINDOWS>ren setupx.old setupx.dll
C:\WINDOWS>command\attrib -r -s -h c:\msdos.sys
C:\WINDOWS>command\edit c:\msdos.sys

At this point, you should see something like this up on your screen:

UninstallDir=C:\
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS.000
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS.000
HostWinBootDrv=C

etc..

Change it so it reads,

UninstallDir=C:\
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

And save it ('Alt-X' then 'x' then 'y') and reboot.
It'll be worthwhile if it saves you from having to reload the OS. You can repartition with 'Partition Magic' or some other live partitioning software.

But if you really, really want kill it all, I'll show you how. :)

Re: Next Case!

Paul. Everything displayed and progressed as you suggested until I got to this:

At this point, you should see something like this up on your screen:

UninstallDir=C:\
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS.000
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS.000
HostWinBootDrv=C

The first line in this string simply says:

(PATHS)
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS.000
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS.000
HostWinBootDrv=C

What should I do?

Re: Next Case!

That's fine, just change those two lines (WinDir and WinBootDir) to C:\WINDOWS. I'm using my computer for some of these instructions, and it's got a unique windows install on it...

Re: Next Case!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAMAZING, pure Genius! Just like I never meddled with it. It's even on the internet, as we speak. The Mrs. as well as I thank you sooo much. Saved me hours of more work.

This morning, a friend said he would give me his 98SE upgrade disc. Once I get it, I should have no problem. Then the Mrs.'s MP3 player present will work and she'll be doubly happy.

Should I look on the internet for the partition program you mentioned?

Thanks again.

Re: Next Case!

:)
Glad to be of help. Looks like Symantec isn't offering free trials of Partition Magic anymore (BEWARE of those offering them!!). Give Ranish Partition Manager a try - it seems good. You need to run it from DOS though.

Make a folder (C:\PART) and uncompress the program into it. Then restart in MS-DOS mode. To run it, type:
C:\WINDOWS>cd \part
C:\PART>part244

Unfortunately, it's very technical but it can do what you want.
