With the recent passing of my FIL, I used Craigslist to dispose of much of his household items. These were things that you could not possibly ship due to their size and weight.

I bent over backwards to both describe and realistically price all item. I had fabulous success.(not without work).

Today I hear that ebay has aquired a signifigant interest in Craigslist. As a result, Craigslist has test programs in several major markets, to charge for what has been an effective free service.

This is dishearting.

Yeah, it really is disheartening. Last time (about a couple months ago)I heard was that Ebay bought some 25% ownership of Craiglists; but didn't hear that they are starting to charge to advertise there...even though I worried that someday this is going to end as soon as Ebay have their hands on it.
I guess that day is coming... :(

there are a lot of for-sale lists that spun off of the freecycle,

Here in MO, there is missourimarketplace yahoogroup
It's got over 1,000 members on the group now, I've bought and sold there many times.

I'm sure just about every state has a couple big yahoo groups for that.

As Bob said, the freecycle groups are world wide and a good place to get rid of that stuff you don't want.
The only catch, is that everything must be free, no buying or selling on the freecycle groups.
Here is my group here in Boyd County.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BoydCountyKYfreecycle/
