Re: Newbie with a Rinker ?

I have a 1995 Rinker 180 w/ the 3.0 that I like a lot. Our family of 5 (kids 6, 4, 1) use if for wake boarding, knee boarding and tubing. Also take out friends ~200lbs each for water sport / hanging out weekends.

Mine is powerful enough to do all this and more. Your 4.3 will be great for this use. As for Rinkers in general, I have been pleased with mine and have seen several others out and about, and online that look great and have happy owners.

Re: Newbie with a Rinker ?

We purchased a '91 206 with the 4.3 two seasons ago. The 4.3 in the 20 1/2 foot doesn't set any speed records by no means but we've pulled ski'ers, wakeboard, and even a Chariot Warbird tube thats damn near as big as the boat without any problems. I've often teased my 8 year old daughter that I was gonna trade for a new boat we see on dealers lots or in magazines and she wants nothing to do with it, she loves our old boat as she puts it.

The Rinker should be trouble free for you. As far as the engine and outdrive goes....there is no better place for education and advice than this forum! I've relied on it often, even on things that are not issues or problems (yet) so to speak. Just a wealth of knowledge.

Only other thing I can throw in there is to buy an op manual and service man, paper or cd, (i've been advised NOT a SELOC man.), if you don't already have one. Watch your guages religiously, water temp and oil pressure especially. And find out what the max rpm the engine should run, because if the prop has been changed, WOT may deliver more RPM than the engine can handle. It would be advised to check at the engine to make sure the tach guage is correct. And water temp., I found ours to be running 160 to 170 when we first got it. I then droped the lower unit and found the raw water pump tube melted, further investigation I found an 160 deg. auto thermostat had been put in instead of the 145 the man. called for. R&R and running cool since.

Last but not least........B.O.A.T......stands for Break Out Another Thousand.

Good luck be carefull and have fun!

Doug,

Thanks for the info..!!

Ive got the basic rinker owners manual, rinker says they dont have model specific ones, but where can i get a service manual from?? How did you check your water temp?? I will keep a good look out on those gauges!

Thanks again!!

Re: Newbie with a Rinker ?

Mike,

I actually found it in cd(pdf) off of ebay, it covered all sterndrive models for that year range 1964 thru 1991 along w/ several others. As far as water temp...I started my quest based on the temp guage on the dash without a manual check at the engine. The temp would show cool out on plane but at an idle or no wake the temp climbed slowly,..I guessed I wasn't getting enough water. I had in my head I wanted to replace at least the water pump prior for mainly peace of mind anyway. Thats also when I found the themostat which more than likely cased the melted tube, of course I'm just speculating, but she's run cool ever since the replacement of both the raw water pump and eng. thermostat. If you have any mechanic buddies they may have a temp guage or gun you could use to verify temp at the engine.

Re: Newbie with a Rinker ?

Newbie,

The temperature warning is a good one. I have always changed the raw water pump every other year and not had a problem. I believe the owners manuals say every year, but I have found that to be overkill.

I had an 89 Celebrity 181 with the 4.3 that we bought new. It was one of the easiest on gas boats I ever owned.

If you pick up a piece of trash or leaves or something, you can overheat one real quick, so keep a watch on the temp as recommended.

Can't wait till spring either just purchased a 2007 Rinker Captiva 260DB.

Been boating since I was a little kid though.

My boys both have a Captiva 232BR. Have been out in their boats and I was impressed. I wanted a change from my SearaySundancer 240 as we wanted to return to an open bow with the Grandkids getting older and into skiing and tubing.

I have that same boat. It works well for us. We fish, swim and tube with it. How much do they want for the one you want to buy?

16yrs later, the rinker in question is likely to be scrapped by now.....
