I have been reading for while before purchasing a pontoon and really enjoy the forum. We looked for several months before finding a premier 225 with a 115 merc 4 stroke. Very clean unit with low hours. We took it out over the weekend with five people and pretty windy conditions, but I thought this setup should get close to 30 mph. I did not get the gps out but near dark on smooth water we were only seeing 23 or 24. My intial thought is stainless prop. I realize they aren't made for speed, but just a little slower than thought. I was pushing 5k RPM at WOT which didnt appear to be much a load on the motor. We were cruising at 4k at 20 mph. I know bass boat but not much on toons. I can say that it used very little fuel for the amount of riding we did which I prefer, but like I mentioned just expected a little more. From the performance on bass boats I was looking at stainless, but dont know that it matters on the toon. Thanks any help is much appreciated.

Re: Newbie with a few questions

Welcome !!! Not that familiar w/ the Premier 225, but if it is a twin tube rig, mid 20's for speed seems reasonable with a 115 hp. Although, 5000 rpm WOT for that motor seems on the low side. I believe it's rated for closer to 6000 rpm. More details about your prop size would help??? Stainless Steel or Aluminum is probably just your personal preference. Good luck.

Welcome! I have a similar set up (22 ft Bentley with a 115 Merc 4 stroke). Boat was delivered with an 11x14 aluminum prop and my max speed was around 22 MPH. I changed the prop to a 13x15 aluminum and my top end increased to 30 MPH! WOT RPM is around 6200. All numbers quoted with 3 adults and gear on board. Hope this helps...

This is about what I am seeing on the boat in my signature, and you should be in about the same area. Not familiar with Premier model ID's, is a 225 22 ft or 25 ft?

Re: Newbie with a few questions

If you can provide the boat length and number of logs it would be easier to estimate. My 25' Tri-Toon with a 115hp and 5 adults would push about 27mph at 5800 rpms. This is including about 30 gallons of fuel and 2 coolers. With just me on board I get 5900rpms and 29mph. This is with a Turning Point 14x13p Aluminum Prop. Stainless may get you a 1mph.

Also keep in mind that without GPS you have no idea how fast you are really going. My Speedo will show anywhere between 20 and 23mph when I am running 27mph.

Your speed is way to low, I agree with the other posters, you should be somewhere around 28/30 mph.
Go ont the net and type in ...Boat Tests, you will find several boating magazines that have tested almost every Pontoon on the market. They show speed and everything else.

I would bet the right prop for you is a 14x13p and you should see about 27-28mph

It has a quick silver 2034P15, so I was wrong it is a 15. I guess the first thing I need to do is get a gps on it.
