I just bought a new Skeeter SL190 with a Yamaha Vmax 150 (carb). I was going to take it out this weekend and start breaking in the motor. It is supposed to be near 60 this weekend, here in KC. The water temperature is going to be very cold though, probably mid to low thirties. I was wondering if the water temperature would affect the break in of the motor. Or should I wait for warmer water to break it in? I did not know if the motor would ever come up to normal temps while running at the innitial low speeds the break in procedure calls for. Any thoughts?

I would also like to hear your opinions of this motor. Any issues I should look out for? Thanks in advance for your help.

Ahoy, Tree Guy.

The Yammy VMAX line is one of the most respected out there. Check JD Powers.

Your thermostats should manage engine operating temperature adequately during break in in cold water.

Good luck. :)

If you decide to take it out ,I'd go easy on the rpms for a while until the lower unit oil had a chance to thin out a bit.Water temp in the thirties is going to keep it like cold syrup for a while.

Re: newbie with a couple of questions

Thanks for your help guys. I will definately be taking it easy until it is warmed up, and then follow the manufacturers break in procedures. I just wanted to be sure the cold temps would not hurt the new motor.

Probably not the best time of year to be buying a new boat, and breaking it in. But I got a deal I couldn't pass up. Thanks again.

actually for you it was the best time to buy a boat for the very reason you listed, you got a great deal! buy off season or after a bad year of boating and you get the best deals.
